The paper chooses Giuseppe Tornatore, a fantastic Italian film director, as the research object and explores how his film style forms and changes over the past three decades. The female image shall be the starting point to be studied. The paper is going to explain "Return Trilogy" as well as his own experiences. Based on the research method of movie noumenon and the theory tool of the author theory, the paper explores the reminiscence topics of his films. At the same time, it finds the difference between his previous works and later works. It also describes the psychological mechanisms that lie behind the female image change from the previous works to the later works. A comparison study is from two totally different perspectives, namely, the men’s complex feelings on the women, the women’s independence. Finally, a full three-dimensional director research work is expected to be done.In the first part, it briefly introduces the European film development, the status of Tornatore in Italian and European art films as well as the relation between Tornatore and the film directors of Italian new realism. After changing to make different types of films, Tornatore has borrowed the specific contents of the commercial films. All of these items are going to be explained in this part.From the perspective of author theory, the second part analyzes the constancy in the variation of Tornatore’s works, especially the constancy of female images built by him. Namely, the constancy is the influence of his reminiscence topics on the female image. Combined with the analysis (lens color, narrative technique, music) of movie noumenon, it reveals the "reminiscence" topic that appears repeatedly in Tornatore’s films. Besides, it analyzes the female roles’ image features, presence form, their motive status in Tornatore’s previous works, the Star Maker, Cinema Paradiso, the Legend of 1900 to find the relation between the female roles and the "reminiscence" topic as well as the roles’ continuity.The third part and the fourth part shall mainly show how Tornatore’s later movie style evolves. The female image evolution shall be the beginning point to find the new theory tool. It uses the feminism to explore the psychological mechanisms behind the evolution. While exploring the evolution, it is going to mainly study how Tornatore’s directing style continues the "reminiscence" topic in this evolution and how Tornatore (as the author film) shows the "reminiscence" topic in the female image building.Although the film subjects, story backgrounds and the female roles change a lot, Tornatore’s "reminiscence" topic has never changed. Most of the time, Tornatore shows how men praise women. Based on this praise as well as the "reminiscence" topic, the female image has become the most symbolical film character in Tomatore’s films, which is the most impressive and unforgettable. As his film topics, the female image is full of reminiscence and romance.
