An Analysis Of Oriental Theme Of The Chinese-american Science-Fiction Writer Ken Liu’s Typical Works

Based on the post-colonialism theory of Homi Bhabha, culture studies theory of Stuart Hall, and the method of close-reading, the thesis focuses on the Oriental theme of Chinese American science fiction writer Ken Liu’s typical works. The Oriental theme of his typical works has been categorized, concluded and analyzed thoroughly.As one of the most outstanding characteristics of Ken Liu’s science fictions, the theme of Orient has been showed in his many works. In the thesis, author selects the most two famous and representative science fictions as the main targeted content, and divides the analysis of the Oriental theme into three layers. The first layer is the theme of Oriental folk customs. In the chapter, the author lists all the typical elements of folk customs, then chooses the most outstanding folklore carriers as symbols to analyzes the theme of folk customs with the method of close-reading. The second layer is the theme of Oriental characters, languages and literary forms. In the chapter,the author makes a textual research about the typical examples, then makes a thorough analysis and associated reading about the Oriental characters, languages and literary forms in these two fictions. The author not only analyzes the facial meaning of those language and literature but also digs into the profound implication behind them. The third layer is the theme of Oriental cultural values. In the chapter, the author selects and refines the Oriental cultural values which are expressed intensively in the two fictions and unfolds a series of summary and analyses towards those cultural values form different aspects, and explores the deep meaning expressed by these works and discovers the Oriental cultural values which Ken Liu intends to pass and spread around. In summary, based on the relevant theories and detailed text, the author analyzes the Oriental theme of Ken Liu’s typical works thoroughly in three layers.
