Report On The Translation Of Commentary Outline Of Cultural Relics Exhibited In Juzhou Museum

Museum, as a “window” to displaying a nation’s culture, exhibits abundant cultural relics which carry important historic and cultural connotations. In the modern era characterized by dynamic international exchange, an increasing number of foreign tourists show their interest in visiting Chinese museums to have a close contact with traditional Chinese culture. In this sense, the translation of museum commentary plays an increasingly important role in international cultural communications.This report is based on the translation practice of Commentary Outline of Cultural Relics Exhibited in Juzhou Museum, providing an explicit description about the task from three sections: task description, process description and case analysis. The section of case analysis serves as the core of this report, which mainly discusses the translation strategies of culture-loaded words, such as names of cultural relics, proper names, official titles, expressions of custom and of religion. From the perspective of syntactic level, this report analyzes the translation of long difficult sentences from Chinese to English and its translation methods. Lastly, the current author draws a conclusion including the significance, findings and limitation of this report.Under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, the current author attempts to attach great importance to the target readers’ acceptability and endeavors to generate the same response in the target readers as in the source readers. In order to guarantee the translation quality, the current author also follows the principles of precision, concision and understandability in the whole process of translation. The current author hopes that her English version of Commentary Outline of Cultural Relics Exhibited in Juzhou Museum will help the foreign tourists better understand the cultural elements and historic background, and further make some contribution to the promotion of traditional Chinese culture.The current author has gained much insight from this translation report: firstly, museum commentary has its unique language and stylistic features, i.e. the feature of using colloquial expressions in diction and its style of archaeology; secondly, the translation of museum commentary, different from other practical translations, requires the translator to have rich knowledge reserves and proficient bilingual competence; and lastly, since the translation of museum commentary has the dual features of technical translation and tourism translation, the study of the translation of museum commentary is of valuable insights and reference significance for other styles of translation.
