Research On Suspense In Li Peifu’s Fiction

As one of narrative skills in the traditional Chinese fiction,the suspense has been inherited and innovated in Li Peifu’s fiction.Different from the detective fiction or the martial arts fiction that is full of suspense,his suspense skill is applied appropriately with presenting its own unique artistic quality.Li Peifu’s fiction combined the suspense skill with other narrative techniques,not only got the reader’s attention,but also expressed the theme of his fiction.However,so far there has been no academic papers integrally formulating the suspense in Li Peifu’s fiction.In order to fill up the deficiency of the suspense in Li Peifu’s fiction for predecessors,a systematic research on the suspense in Li Peifu’s fiction was based on the previous research results and innovation.The expressive form and specific details of Li Peifu’s fiction in suspense analyzed in close reading,literature research,theoretical approach,the system analysis and the summarizing methods,so the suspense in Li Peifu’s fiction has been sorted out in terms of the following four aspects:narrative perspective,narrative space-time,plot structure and narrative language.The suspense setting from white space of the limited understanding narrative offers readers more wide re-creation space.The suspense setting from the changing narrative perspectives which opens up intellectual territory and new aesthetic space for readers. Setting suspense with flashback and flashforward is inherited from Chinese traditional suspense skill. Creating narrative space to set suspense is mainly reflected in showing the atmosphere and imagery.Creating imagery space filled with suspense is the feature of suspense in Li Peifu’s fiction.Imagery atmosphere is the highlight of his suspense containing unique implication.Opening suspense is uncommon,serial suspense in the middle is interconnected,the thematic suspense leave in the air and faint foreshadowing sweeping across the whole text,all these demonstrate that the structure and suspense can complement each other. Suspense-creation is good for its perfection of the structure and reasonable structure is indispensable for the suspense-creation.Language Style that is concise and unexpected,obscure and inflectional,magic and absurd,made his fiction full of suspense and enhanced aesthetic value of his fiction.The appropriate demonstration of suspense in his fiction aroused reader’s imagination,expressed the theme of his fiction,deepened its connotation and innovated the fiction’s structure,all these make his fiction showing unique charming and have fully demonstrated the innovation in Li Peifu’s fiction.The research area of suspense in Li Peifu’s fiction was enriched and the inheritance and innovation of suspense arts in Chinese contemporary fiction were also demonstrated.
