The Translator’s Subjectivity Under Hermeneutic Translation Theory

The Great Gatsby is masterpiece of Fitzgerald and ranks second in the modern library’s list of the 100 Best English Novels of the 20 century. The thesis hypotheses that George Steiner’s Hermeneutic translation theory not only provides guidance for process of the translation and leads the translation focus from standard of equivalence to the source text to the role of translator’s subjectivity in the process of translation but also it has powerful interpretative and practical in the aspect of translators’subjectivity.This thesis will make comparative analysis the translation versions of The Great Gatsby from the translator’s subjectivity under George Steiner’s Hermeneutic translation theory in order to explore how translator’s experiences, literature cultivation, ideology, and world values and so on play an important role in the trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation stages and have great influences on the quality of the translation. This thesis is composed of six parts. Part one mainly discusses research background, significance and outline of this thesis. Part two illustrates review of the literature on the study of the Hermeneutics, translator’s subjectivity and translation versions of The Great Gatsby home and abroad. Part three Cover the theoretical framework of this thesis. It gives brief introductions to the development of the Hermeneutic and then presents the fourfold translation motion theory of George Steiner that provides theoretical basis for analysis of translator’s subjectivity in process of translation. Part four is about the research method and introduction to the text, translation versions, author and the translators of The Great Gatsby. Part five studies the translation versions of The Greats Gatsby from translator’s subjectivity under George Steiner’s translation motion theory. Part six is the conclusion part including the major findings, limitations of this thesis and some suggestions for the further study. It is certainly that George Steiner’s Hermeneutic translation theory will provide new angles for critics of translation versions and enrich translation theories and practice.
