Natsume Soseki’s insightful reflection on Japan’s modernization has gone through his lifelong works. In his perspective, the "civilization" of Japan is shallow and surface, the industrialized society came with distorted and morbid social values. During the process of modernization, "Atma-graha" is a kind of abnormal value which is reflected in the contradiction between individual self-establishment and modern society. It is also a kind of construction based on distorted modern cultural identity the Natsume Soseki proposed. Among his works, Gubijinso reflects the "Atma-graha" most.This paper is composed of three parts:introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction part reviews the researches in the past on Gubijinso in Japan and China, and analyze the research questions remained to be solved. Based on this,the topic is proposed. The second part is the main part of the article. The first chapter selects the three characters in the text materials about "Atma-graha" and carries out a deep analysis and then illustrates the specific individual performance of "Atma-graha". The second chapter explores the reasons for "Atma-graha" from three aspects:individual, family, society. The third chapter focus on how to break the "Atma-graha" and explain the Natsume Soseki’s unique style of Oriental philosophy of "moral" and "reborn" two approaches to get rid of the "Atma-graha" in Gubijinso, to solve the problems in the self-establishment. The fourth chapter further my study in the cultural context of modern Japan. Natsume Soseki’s other works are also discussed, and the significance of "Atma-graha" in the process of Natsume Soseki’s own thought transformation is discussed. The conclusion part summarizes the main ideas and discusses the status of Gubijinso in Natsume Soseki’s works and the limitation in the process of self-establishment.
