Correlation Between Film Music And Visual Image In The Perspective Of Film Music Aesthetic

The correlation between film music and visual image is the key topic of film music aesthetics. In a movie, the visual image can project figures and tell stories, while the music can express emotions and feelings. Then how they relate to each other? How they contradict, conflict, complement or support each other?Based on these questions,we will demonstrate the argument in this paper. From the perspective of music aesthetics, we tried to understand the current academic research situation about correlation between film music and visual images, by using documentary study,observation survey, case analysis, cross-disciplinary and other research methods. By comparing materials from the domestic and foreign literatures, we classified,organized and analyzed the correlation between film music and visual image, as well as the recognition of film music aesthetics. Then, starting from the independence and dependency of film music, we see film music as an element of film. Through researching and studying about the origins, technology development and the change of concept of people in film music, we analyzed the correlation in comprehensive between the film music and visual image. At the same time, combining with our own experiences of film appreciation, we gave a lot of examples to prove our point of view.In this paper, we deeply discussed a series of complementation-division and harmony-contrast in film music and visual image, including the dramatic effects causing consciously by using contrasts and conflicts. We also distinguish the correlation between film music and visual image from the perspective of form and content, as well as from global and local levels. We tried to build up a “one-shaft dual-track” functional cognitive model to understand their correlation, asking how different music and image correlation service to the film, and how they are coordinated and unified. According to the cognitive model, we come to our conclusion that the image and plot on the screen, as well the emotions and feelings in music, are correlatively functioned to depict the image of the movie, as a symbol, to express the thinking of the character and the author’s attitude. Under the correlation between the whole film music and visual image, film music and visual images serve the dramatic situation and help narrating the structure. Both film music and image in a movie are correlating and functioning together, generated in the dynamic process of film narrating.
