Harmonic Characteristic Analysis Of Huang Anlun’s Piano Compositions

Although the creation of piano works and piano performing arts of China are late started and hard developed, there is a solid foundation for the health development of them, under the unremitting efforts of several generation of workers. The Chinese composers mainly focuses on the exploration of ethnic style creation, so do piano works. Huang Anlun, a composer, is an important representative personage of this domain. His works are with distinctive sense of the times and full of Chinese ethnic style. He did a lot of effort to solve the nationalization of Harmony. Analyzing and researching the characteristic of Harmony in his piano works is a subject worthy to study.Huang Anlun lived abroad permanently, and is a modern composer of Ethnic Chinese in Canada. His works contained many domains of professional music creation such as opera, chamber music, ballet, symphonies, instrumental solo, vocal music, chorus and so on.He is also a pianist, and his piano works takes a certain position in the music genres above. Harmony in his piano works represent one aspect of his music creation, and reflect the characteristics of Harmony. In this paper, the main line of research is the major piano works of Huang Anlun. Combined with the composer’s creation ideas and compared with other composers’works, the author analyzes the harmonies and try to make a summarize of Huang’s works, to understand the value and status of harmony characteristic in his piano works, and to reflect the work of Chinese composer Huang Anlun as Ethnic Chinese in Canada to combine the European compositional techniques and Chinese national style.Thesis is divided into four parts:The first part is a brief introduction of Huang Anlun’s creative ideas and part of his work; the second part is to analyze and summarize the material and shape of Polyphonic, with the diversify of chord structure; the third part is to study the distribution of Mode and Tonality and the Harmony in Modulation of his works; the fourth part is the analysis of the national elements and twelve-tone music included in his creation, and then expand to the exploration about the combine of pentatonic and twelve-tone technique of contemporary composer to understand the creation of other "national style".Through the above analysis, the Harmony characteristics of the piano works of Huang Anlun are summarized in three aspects:the use of melodic writing techniques with innovative features in Pentatonic basis; adhere to tonal music and make works with distinct characteristics of the times; focus on sound effects and tried rendering the magnificent momentum in folk music. He absorbed Western composition techniques, and use the idea of Chinese nationalization harmonies in his works. He is the successful composer who combined Chinese and Western music style.
