This article is intended to discuss the rise, development, and gradually decline of small landscape of small landscape of the Northern Song Dynasty from the perspective of significance of changes. The paintings of small landscape are faceless, and there are many opposite discuss in the size shape, style or theme of pictorial structure, which also increases the difficulties on understanding from the perspective of traditional painting style or theme of research.This paper attempts to change perspective,and focus on of the user or the recipient of small landscape painting, to discuss the meaning to the users and changes of form or content of the landscape paintings. The paper tried to point out the complexity and blur of small landscape has its own historical roots, and the meaning of small landscape for users in different spatial and temporal context is not the same. The meaning of small landscape painting can get practical understanding only in the specific historical and cultural context. By discussing changes of significance at different times and in different sectors of the population of small landscape,we can sketch out a variety of connotations and appearance of small landscape of the Northern Song Dynasty.The small landscape painting created by monk Huichong at Five Danasties. The painting can independently emerged over the history of painting attribute to the differences of the regional style in north and south. Early connotation of small landscape were closely related with Huichong, both an image of his real-life experience, but also a work of art under his personal emotions and thought patterns role. The meaning of small landscape for Huichong is personal emotions by poetic images and language of paintings.Small landscape painting rediscovered by Su Shi and Huang Tingjian in the middle of North Song Dynasty. We can discuss The significance of small landscape for scholars from two aspects. From a political point of view, the North Song Dynasty reform and innovation echo the political situation, and as the opponents of reform,Scholars like Su Shi and Huang Tingjian,praise highly on small landscape paiting.Just as distinguish between small landscape panting and panoramic landscape created by Li Cheng and Guo Xi, it is a strategy scholar distinguishes themselves from the mainstream discourse of Empire. On the other hand,Huang Tingjian and other scholars write verses on small landscape paintings,which given small landscape paiting reclusive sense, In order to express the boredom and discontent of political reality. From a cultural point of view, the influence in the field of paintings of scholars was more evident, whether in the creation or collection of writings reveals the appreciation of the scholars aesthetic tastes.These tastes are closely related to the demands of self-expression of scholars,which led to rediscovery similar to subjective expression form of paiting such as small landscape paiting.While being found by scholars,small landscape paiting were reinterpreted by a group of royal artists.The royal artists had close contacts with scholars,and their small landscape was echoed to scholars to some extent.These royal artists didn’t experience scholars’s lives,so their small landscape paiting no longer had the political expression similar to scholars.In the years of Emperor Huizong,the imperial art academy absorbed and transformed small landscape paiting.Through discussing the works of painters of imperial art academy and selection mechanism of the content of the examination, we can know small landscape paiting of the imperial art academy inherited the poetic emotion,but lost the original rich content in the specific meaning. Small landscape painting developed towards formalization and pattern,so declined and conversed in the end.In general,the meaning of small landscape painting changed with the situation of specific historical context and the demands of "user" of small landscape painting,.the meaning of small landscape painting changes among the monks, scholars and court,but also hidden an overall trend,which is rich connotations such as private demands gradually subside, formalization gradually enhanced.these factors led to small landscape painting declined and transformed.
