Lotus is an important element in traditional Chinese culture and has entered Chinese people’s aesthetic world since ancient times during which numerous paintings of lotus were created. This paper summarizes Pan Tianshou’s thoughts of artistic creation and the methods and evolution process of his paintings through investigating his paintings of lotus. And the exploration and discussion of the characteristics of Pan’s lotus paintings is the most important part. The author believes that Pan Tianshou’s techniques of using brush and ink in his lotus paintings mainly originate from the ancient epigraphy since its revival in Qing dynasty, and it continues the Chinese painting’s tradition of structural use of brush to emphasize lines. The composition of Pan Tianshou’s paintings is vast and expansive, which fulfills the visual principle of "Three-Depth" in traditional Chinese landscape paintings, and makes full use of the composition principle of "point-line-plane".Pan Tianshou’s creation principle in his lotus paintings is prominent and occupies an important position in the history of modern flower-and-bird painting, and it has an important impact on the creation of modern Chinese painting. The author chooses lotus as the subject of his graduation work, which learns from Pan Tianshou’s principle of using brush and ink in lotus paintings. The whole work includes the learning process, the design of the whole work and the reflections of the creation.
