Lu xun fights for his lifetime by using his pen as a weapon. His spirit is regarded as Chinese "national soul". His essays have a very important status in Chinese modern literature because they have realistic significance in anti-feudalism, anti-warlords, and anti-compression. His pen is just like a gun, fighting with enemies in those days fiercely. Many of Lu xun’s essays are concerned about feminism. He shows sympathy to those females and shapes a series of various female figures. Just like his novels, his essays also reflect his concern with the destiny and living conditions of Chinese females, so as to throw light on emancipation of females. This thesis, apart from introduction and implications, consists of three chapters and will explain the significance and value of female description in his essays from those three aspects. The first chapter mainly displays the female figures in Luxun’s essays. According to his attitudes towards females in essays, I classify those females into three types. The first type is the particular figures in reformers’eyes, which he hates. The second type is the old and new female figures in enlightenment peoples’ writings, to which he shows his sympathy. The third type is the reforming female figures to whom those pioneers give hope, and he speaks highly of them. This chapter mainly analyzes females characters and digs into his attitudes towards different types of characters by combining those female characters in his essays.Based on the first chapter, the second chapter further analyzes the typicality and writing intention of those female characters. I will mainly exposit it from three aspects. Firstly, they reflect the typicality of complete personality, which is analyzed by highly summarizing life and combining reality and history. Secondly, they present the typicality of true characters by combining background and analyzing how he presents those female characters truthfully. I get to know that they achieve it by borrowing names, rewriting classics, and conveying spirit by appearance. They reflect the typicality of the nature of culture, which mainly contains the typicality of revenge culture and male compression. The third chapter mainly analyzes the significance and value of female characters in his essays. Firstly, females in essays have social significance, especially female emancipation significance. Females fight perseveringly in order to gain economic independence and realize their personal value. Secondly, females in essays have aesthetic significance, mainly poetic beauty by appraising repeatedly and color beauty through extreme clashes.
