China in the 20th century has experienced a great transition from a traditional society to a modern one. Modern intellectuals fought desperately with the ruling class for discourse right. They actively protected and created a public space for discourse and aired their opinions through the media such as newspapers and publications. This dissertation categorizes Luxun's essays into mass media dominated by newspapers. Based on Luxun's essays on Ziyoutan, the supplement of Shenbao, the dissertation discusses how Luxun made use of the public space to strive for and protect individual discourse right and stuck to the independence and liberty of thoughts.Chapter1: Luxun's literary writing and modern media. This chapter dwells on the impact of the rise and development of modern media on Luxun's literary writing and choice of literary styles. This chapter consists of 3 sections. Section 1 talks about how modern media rose and the cultural environment developed from its rising. Section 2 is about the important relationship between the establishment of Luxun's literary style and modern media. Section 3 describes that Luxun had tried to set up a public space in which he could air his opinions by establishing a magazine.Chapter 2: The Reform of Ziyoutan, the Supplement of Shenbao, and Luxun's essay writing. The reform of Ziyoutan made it possible for Luxun to "air his own voices". Luxun won his individual discourse right in this public space, which was ultimately disintegrated under the oppression of the ruling power.Chapter3: Luxun's Essays: Individual discourse and power discourse. Luxun's essays on Ziyoutan, the Supplement of Shenbao, were rich in content and mainly reflected Luxun's thoughts in that period. This chapter falls into three sections to elaborate on it: fighting against power discourse; protecting individual discourse; and holding fast to independence and freedom on thoughts.
