In this paper, the author analyzes Lu Xun’s theoretical construction of the independent persons. In the meanwhile, she also interprets ten independent characters (the madman, Xia Yu, Mr.N, Lv Weifu, the lunatic, Wei Lianshu, Juansheng, Yu, Yan Zhiao, Mozi) in Lu Xun’s novels. In this way, the author gets a perspective on Lu Xun’s writing about the independent persons. The author believes that Lu Xun putting forward a claim to make supermen was based on the special historical environment, especially alerting the disadvantages of material and democracy, and what he wanted to make were independent persons. As a result of disapproving of material and approving of spirit, approving of minority and disapproving of majority, the independent persons reflect Lu Xun’s opinions that were respecting for individuality and carrying forward spirit. In addition, Lu Xun admired the modern western moro poets, and took it as an opportunity to think about the heresies of the traditional Chinese culture and Yue culture. On the basis of inheriting a variety of heresies, Lu Xun got new thoughts of independent persons and integrated them into his literary creation. Then he creatively shaped a series of independent characters in Collections Call to Arms (Na Han), Wandering (Pang Huang) and Old Tales Retold (Gu Shi Xin Bian). At the same time, the author thoroughly investigates the spiritual features of ten independent characters in Lu Xun’s novels and finds that their patterns are different from each other with the exception of common personal confidence. The madman, Xia Yu and Mr.N show a mad spiritual feature. Lv Weifu, the lunatic, Wei Lianshu and Juansheng show a cautious spiritual feature. Yu, Yan Zhiao and Mozi show a fierce spiritual feature.Undoubtedly, the appearance of the independent characters is a shock for the traditional Chinese ethical culture. Lu Xun corrected some mistakes which were the products of taking collectivism as the stand of morality by putting emphasize on individuals, that is to say, the independent characters in Lu Xun’s novels don’t only develop the individual cultural spirit, but also show the cultural spirit of group. Like the phoenix nirvana, they have become new individuals of the modern east. Obviously, the independent characters’ plight of the cross station has been foreseen by Lu Xun. But the forlorn hope still supported Lu Xun who was almost desperate to be willing to be a cheer who occasionally cheered others up. His independent characters also set an example to explore a new way of life, and give us lots of profound revelations.
