The Vision Of Ego And Power:A Narrative Study On The Role Of Mother-in-law In The Contemporary Urban Emotional Play

I had being curious how the name "mother-in-law" can suddenly become a hot topic online and in society. Advertising and various Medias construct an image of a power in the manipulation of the marriage, and stimulus the economy by forcing son-in-law to buy a house. I interpreted that mother-in-law without power, and been a goods consumed by the mainstream in the field of gender power. The symbol of mother-in-law relieves their encounter process of injustice when pursuing of happiness, dissolves the embarrassing situation of materialized marriage, and eliminates social stress and anxiety. Mother-in-law, with the voice in the edge area, was enveloped in the center of the discourse, to refer to all the negative value system.I analyzed the text about contemporary urban emotional play---by reviewing pregnant plot and the heroic narrative study, then build the deep meaning structures of the relation between two native families, male-female and youth-old power relations. Through the analysis, I realize that the "double edge" mother-in-law regard her daughter as another herself, she pulled her own project to daughter and avoid self-need and self-development. And the daughter requires independent but unable to hold up lives, mothers have lost in the contradiction. When facing son-in-law, the mother-in-law fell into the abyss of patriarchy. She regard son-in-law as the umbrella of happiness, financially and spiritually. In native family relationships, the mother-in-law associated with the other mother-in-law, act as agent of patriarchy, push the daughter realize her physiological fate of having babies, they didn’t realize that it is ideological building.Of course, each individual can’t escape family-society-country power net. House as a symbolic expression and higher housing prices become a pair of contradictions, individual want to pursuit of it and can’t afford it by himself. The role mother-in-law connects the field of public contradiction and the private sector. They reveal the social stress, and laid the blame on the mother-in-law role.
