Julian Barnes is a famous contemporary British writer, he is keen on language experiment, loves break the normal procedure using different narrative techniques, shows different narrative style. The narrative images in Barnes’ s novels are rich, undertake important narrative function and have profound connotation. This paper selects Barnes’ s five novels for the study and uses related narrative theories combined of close reading of the text, analyses the narrative images in Barnes’ s novels, to explore the deconstruction implication.The thesis consists of three parts: preface, main text and conclusion. The introduction briefly introduces the situtation of the creation of Barnes’ s novels, the research status of domestic and foreign scholars on the work at home and abroad, the significance of the topic and research ideas. The text is mainly divided into three chapters to elaborate the narrative images in Barnes’ s novels. The first chapter defines the narrative image on the basis of "image" concept of Chinese traditional aesthetics and Western imagism, combined with the narrative correlation theory, and provides a classification and sorting of the narrative images in Barnes’ s Novels, points out that the narrative images in Barnes’ s novels mainly include three types: animal images,myth images and social images. The second chapter analyzes the narrative images’ function.Including the influence on narrative perspective, narrative clues and narrative themes.Narrative images can show the story as a narrative perspective, enable readers to start on the images’ position, follow its eyes to accept the information.Images can also cause the changes in the narrative perspective to show the different sides of the story, so that readers construct different criteria for judging, establish a more comprehensive view of the characters and understanding of the text in general. In addition, the narrative images can also link the narrative clues, be the main line throughout the full text. At the same time, each narrative image bears the function of conveying themes. The third chapter mainly carries on the excavation of the meaning of the narrative images. Through questioning traditional view of history,deconstructing authoritative discourse and dispelling self-image to explore the implication of its deconstruction. In terms of images questioning the traditional historical view,on the one hand, Barnes uses images subversive and rewrite history, emphasize historical integrity is not sure, on the other hand, continuously pursues and questions the real historical truth through a variety of narrative images. Images deconstruct authority discourse mainly reflected in the narrator deconstruct authority discourse and images itself contain the irony of deconstruction of authority discourse. In images deconstruction of self-image, Barnes’ s protagonists often construct self-image through memory, so the images of the deconstruction of self is outstanding performance for images to recall the objectivity of deconstruction.In conclusion, through the study of narrative images in Barnes’ s novels, explores the narrative function, reveals its profound significance, explores the author’s humanistic care,and aims to deepen and promote the study of Barnes’ s novels, to show the unique narrative techniques and artistic charm of Barnes’ s novels.
