Julian Barnes is a famous novelist in contemporary British literary circles. His works focus on questioning the truth, presenting doubts and denials about the truth of history and the truth of memory. His works reflect a strong heterogeneity. He refuses to be classified into any creative genre,as the same as his own works.Experimental writing skills such as parody, irony, collage,or text mingling make him play the game of words between different genres, but Barnes is not just to gain people’ s attention in terms of technique and form. The use of narrative methods seeks to explore the ultimate problem—Reality. The setting of his works is close to his thinking about reality and his true concern for the individual.Domestic research on the creativity and heterogeneity of narrative techniques in Barnes’ works is common, but from the perspective of narratology, discussions on the truth and truth embodied in Barnes’ works still lack relevant explanations. This provides a good opportunity for this article to study Julian Barnes and his works, especially the discussion about Reality issues and the humanistic care behind his works.Flaubert’s Parrot,A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters, and The Sense of An Ending are three famous works by Julian Barnes, these three works show his amazing narrative techniques.More importantly, the diversity and innovation of the above three works are that Barnes ponders the most in-depth on Reality issues. The close relationship between reality, history and memory has constructed the meaning of these three works. Therefore, the research of this article mainly uses the three works as the analysis text. This thesis attempts to research from Barnes’ representative work, and through the analysis of the textual narrative level, broaden the research horizon to include the author’s inquiries about the truth behind the works, and further explore Barnes’ personal views on the current era.Through the analysis of a specific historical time or the reality we are in in the text, combined with the analysis of the text content and the thinking of the current reality, try to explain that Barnes’ narrative techniques are not a monotonous and shallow game,or the exaggeration of writing skills, but includes his efforts and attempts to dialogue and confront the whole existing thoughts, explaining that Barnes’ texts are actually based on the living conditions of individuals in reality, and in his works,he explores a feasible way out for us,and finally discusses that Barnes’ diverse narrative skills are full of his own humanistic care for individuals. |
