Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence is one of the most controversial novels in the world. This novel has been translated into multiple languages and the Chinese version plays an influential role in the field of Chinese literature. This paper focuses on the annotations in Rao Shuyi and Hei Ma’s version. Annotation, as a special means of translation, whose study can not only reflect communication in specific period of time between the target language culture and the source language culture, but also partly reflects the important factors, such as the translation nature, status and translation strategy which influence the versions in the target language culture. It is of significance for the target language translation research and the acceptance and the transmission of foreign literary works in China at certain historical period.This thesis bases on Lefevere’s rewriting theory and applies exemplification and comparative research method as the methodology. The annotations in the two versions of Lady Chatterley’s Lover have been selected as the examples. The paper mainly analyses the characteristics of the annotations from the perspectives of category, specificity and function and the reasons of the differences. The study conducts from four aspects: first,the author analyzes the differences of the annotations in these two versions and the reasons from the perspective of ideological diversion. Second, the author concludes the role these two versions play and the effects of these two versions in the target language culture from the perspective of literary factors and functional factors in the field of poetics. Third, in the field of universe of discourse, the author analyzes how the translators and readers influenced by target language culture from certain objects,customs and idioms. Finally, the author illuminates the reason of the characteristics of these two versions from the tone and dialect of language.By contrast, the annotations in Rao’s version tend to reserve the characteristics of source language and foreignized translating strategy is mainly adopted. While Hei’s version is deeply influenced by target language culture and cares more about readers’ acceptability and the novel’s popularity resulting to the. The reasons of the characteristiclie in these four aspects: from the perspective of ideology, from Rao’s time to Hei’s time the ideology have changed from patriotism to open and inclusive. In the field of poetics,the dominant literary type changes from expressing patriotism to reader-centered. In the field of universe of discourse, the gradually emphasis on the universe of discourse in the source and target language by the two translators make the differences. From the perspective of language, the different illocutionary strategies as well form the diversified characteristics of the annotations.
