As an outstanding vocalist, educator and composer, Ying Shangneng is the earliest musician who introduced bel canto into China and one of the pioneers who held solo concerts in China. He has the sonorous and lyrical voice of a baritone and is good at singing Chinese and foreign art songs, respecting and maintaining original intentions of a composition. In Phona ting with the Pronuncia tion of Chinese Charac ters (Yi Zi Xing Qiang), a theory work on vocal music, he expounds his ideas on as well as learning and training methods of vocal music in a systematic way, instructing learners in the way of bel canto learning in a clear yet simple manner. More importantly, he added Chinese language culture elements into bel canto, developing a new way for Chinese bel canto learners. Above all, he composed a large number of well-structured songs with simplicity in language, diversity in tonality, intensity in emotion and the color of modernity. Through Interlude Songs for Jin Ke he composed for the historical opera Jin Ke, he let out the strongest voice of Chinese people in fighting against Japanese aggression with other key composers. By means of both his combination of vocal music theory with practice and his scientific exploration of integration of bel canto with phonating system of Chinese characters, he brought about the progress in professional vocal music education and training in China. |
