Strategies For The Chinese-english Translation Of Jade Myth From The Perspective Of Cultural Translation

With the rapid development of Chinese economy, Chinese become more aware of their own culture and national identity. More and more importance is also attached to the communication of Chinese culture in the western world. On such condition, many Chinese classic works are translated into international languages. Chinese jade myths, which are fully loaded with the essence of Chinese culture are among the most translated subjects. The English translation of jade myths is an important issue, since it contributes to the construction of China’s international image, acquisition of international recognition and improvement of Chinese cultural soft power. Thus, it is meaningful for us to translate the jade myths into English and study the English translation of jade myth texts from the perspective of cultural translation.The texts of jade myths are formal and academic, with many technical terms; filled with rich cultural classics; both literary and philosophical; both academic and interesting; involve Chinese Tai Chi, totem, gods and ghosts, sacrifices, rites and etiquettes, genesis myths etc. Under the background of sinology going abroad, we also need to take the Chinese culture and its apprehensibility into consideration. So, when translating such texts, it’s valuable to be guided by the cultural translation theory to ensure that the culture can be well translated.Based on the translation of academic articles of Chinese jade myths, this translation report explores the cultural translation strategies for Chinese-English jade myth translation, by way of analyzing the characteristics of jade myth texts, adopting the theories of cultural translation and combining them with translation practices. The report mainly focuses on the usage of following strategies: substitution, interpretation, transliteration, explaining the east by way of the east, explaining the east by way of the west, paraphrasing and desalination. The report is aimed to provide some concrete, practical and operative references to the cultural translation of jade myth texts, hoping to contribute to the jade myth translation research.
