Translation is cultural exchanges and communications between different nations and nationalities all over the world. Culture has the features of translatability and untranslatability. Scholars have deeply considered and studied translation since the 20 th century, and they proposed the two theories of domestication and foreignization. As far as the cultural translation strategy, the former advocates that the SL culture should be close to the TL culture, while the latter advocates that the foreignness of the SL culture should be attained. The paper studies the Russian and English versions of the Journey to the West, and chooses specific words and sentences with eastern characteristics. From the four aspects of religion culture, mythical culture, courtesy culture and the linguistic culture, the paper makes a comparative analysis of the examples with the relative theories. The paper concludes that the domesticating translation and the foreignization translation are essential to each other and indispensable, each having its own advantages and applicable values. Even a word of composite structure sometimes requires the integrated application of the domesticating translation and the foreignization translation, which complement each other..The paper proposes that we should no longer go on discussing which strategy will misguide translation leading to divergence, but focus on how to choose the appropriate and translation strategies deal with them correctly to improve the translation level in accordance with the text type, the context, the target reader and the translation purpose. Thus, we can promote cultural communication and development all over the world.
