Ecological issue is increasingly becoming a global reality problem.Ecological damage not only endangers the people’s physical and mental health but also sounds the alarm of natural and social survival. In the field of ecological literature, our ecological literature study starts late about 20 years compared with western countries, and mainly concentrates on the nature perception, that is to say that Chinese ecological literature is far from mature. However, in the reality environment, the haze and other ecological environmental problems become sharper and sharper. Therefore, the study starts from the native complex, taking Shen Cong-wen and Faulkner’s two novels as examples to compare the differences between Chinese and western ecological literature which has important theoretical and practical significance.Ecological literature is a kind of literature which reflects the relationship between the ecological environment and the development of human society. The native complex, as the driving force for ecological literature, reflects the ecological concept which author come back to the nature from the root. Because of the differences between Chinese and western culture, the Chinese and western ecological literature which is based on the native complex is also different. Based on the theory of ecological literary criticism and cultural identity as well as the comprehensive comparative analysis of the three dimensions of natural scenery, natural person and natural culture, taking Shen Cong-wen’s “water image” in The Border Town and Faulkner’s “tree-image”in The Bear as examples, this study analyzes the reasons of the similarities and differences from subjective and objective aspects and finally comes to the two works and the author’s ideas which possess theoretical and practical significance in the ecological development. This study begins with the status analysis of the realistic ecological environment and ecological literary study, and points out the deficiencies of the ecological literature studies in China. On this basis, it summarizes the main research contents, methods, and significance. Then, it describes the natural scenery, natural person and natural culture in the “treeimage” and “water image”. Study indicates that Shen Cong-wen takes water as a carrier in The Border Town, realizes the value of spiritual homeland for industrialized society from the perspective of human, nature, social civilization and so on. Faulkner regards the tree as the image of nature in The Bear, through the description about the growth of the hunter Ilk and the narrative of bear’s fate, expresses human’s anger and guilt for the destruction of nature, as well as ecological values which appeals for returning to nature. Then, this study analyzes the causes of the differences between the two images from objective and subjective aspects. It draws a conclusion that the objective aspect involvesthe authors’ different living conditions and social cultures, while the subjective aspect refers tothe authors’ different characters and religious beliefs. Finally, it sums up the specific differences of the two images and the origins, and introspects the reference significance of western ecological values for Chinese ecological literature.
