The Preliminary Study Of Pottery In Small And Medium-scale Tombs Of Western Han Dynasty Around Xuzhou Area

Han tombs are the main archaeological discoveries around Xuzhou area, and the discovery and study of the princes’ tombs are in the spotlight. The small and medium-scale tombs are so abundant that archaeological workers can study social phenomenon of Western Han Dynasty from them, and there are many research achievement published recently. Pottery is the most important structures of the small and medium-scale tombs, occupies an important position in the study of burial.Burial potteries in small and medium-scale tombs around Xuzhou area are many and varied, including Ding(tripod),He(circular box),Hu(kettle),Fang(vessel),Jianxinghu(cocoon shape pot),and stove, granary, mill, well, pig sty. An archaeological typology study on burial potteries is necessary, and on the basis of these study result,this text divides the small and medium-scale tombs into five periods. Through the analysis of different burial potteries of variously period and other burial objects appeared simultaneously,this text draws a conclusion from these achievement: Pottery in small and medium-scale tombs of Western Han Dynasty around Xuzhou area are on the decline which shows in five respects: the change of pottery collection; the popularity of model funerary objects; the reduction of the phenomenon of colored drawing or pattern; the drop of the potterys’ quality; the popularity of glazed earthenware. In order to explore the reasons of decline of the pottery in small and medium-scale tombs of Western Han Dynasty around Xuzhou area,this text has combined with the history literatures to explain the decline, and found out four reasons: The strengthening of control from central government; the influence of the princes’ tombs; the development of local economy; the influence of culture and ideology. The main idea of this text is to study the evolution of the pottery in small and medium-scale tombs of Western Han Dynasty around Xuzhou area, and prepare for some achievement.
