Italo Calvino is a famous Italian litterateur and literary theorist in 20 th century.This outstanding writer,whose creation are mainly novels,made himself fully involved in the literary undertaking,and strived to open up the field of novel.Also,he explores the infinite possibilities of the novel’s art form.Faced with the disorder, chaotic world,he assimilated the crystal philosophy into his literary creation,with the purpose of against the indeterminacy of world.The concept of crystal philosophy,raising from the Exactitude literary view,reflects Calvino’s persistent pursuit in his career.Through the use of crystal philosophy in the novels, Calvino tried to find the meaning of things by reaching infinity through watching limit, cognize the complexity of the world.This article consists of four parts except the exordium and peroration.The first part is“The connotation and manifestation of crystal philosophy in Calvino’s novel”,gives a overview of Calvino’s creation situation,outlines the crystal philosophy and its presentation in the novel,traces the origin of the crystal philosophy.The second chapter is “The crystal mode of thinking”. This chapter offers a systematic explanation to the thinking mode of the crystal philosophy created by Calvino, and exhibits the fusion of Calvino’s crystal philosophy in the novel by 4 different sectors.Multi-plane, multi-angle, related imagination and deduction,filled with delicacy in shaping things are the main characters in Calvino’s novel composition.Chapter 3, “Two kinds of crystal existence”,stands on the roles in the novel with crystal character and analyses the connotation of “crystal characters”.Imperfect ones are searching for identities or existence,whiles ideal ones are reborn and consumed.Through the angle of crystal metaphor,this chapter expects to dig the environment and truth behind those characters in the novel. Meanwhile, Calvino wants to give us a real show about the imperfection in modern lives and anxiety in living of the modern people through creating imperfect crystal characters, and also gives us wonderful hopes by other ideal characters.Chapter 4,“Silence of crystal philosophy”,gives the Calvino’s waver and expression of the composing concepts named crystal philosophy. This chapter focused on Calvino’s later composition Palomar, starts from 3 dimensions containing “chaos of the universe ”,“imperfection of language” and “awkward of self-involvement” to analyze the deep reasons toward the fluctuation of the Calvino’s attitude on crystal philosophy, and expects to understand the alternation of Calvino’s philosophic concepts of the crystal philosophy.
