With the help of Tang dynasty, Nanzhao unified Erhai in the 830 s. But since Tianbao War, Nanzhao joint with Tibetan regime to invade Xichuan, posed a great threat to the southwest border of Tang dynasty, which also turn Tang dynasty armies into a passive position throughout the war with Tibetan regime. In order to reverse the adverse situation of the southwest ancient China, Wei Gao took up the post of Military Governor in the middle of 780 s, on one side, he strengthened economic and military construction of the Xichuan area, for another, he took a variety of measures to joint with Nanzhao after mastering the basic situation of the Nanzhao; ultimately, the alliance between Nanzhao and Tibetan regime was collapsed and making Nanzhao return to Tang dynasty and hence strike the army of Tibetan regime in southwest of Tang dynasty. All in all, Wei Gao has played a very important role in trying to recovery the relationship between Tang dynasty and Nanzhao.The thesis discusses from four aspects: the rise of Nanzhao with the help of Tang Dynasty, the breakdown of relationship between Tang dynasty and Nanzhao, the serious situation that Wei Gao faced when taking up his position and the Weigao’s measures to restore the relastionship with Nanzhao. Firstly, the thesis discusses the relationship beween Tang Dynasty and Nanzhao before AD 785, including Tang dynasty support Nanzhao in the early time, and Nanzhao joint with Tibetan regime in ancient China confront with West Xichuan of Tang Dynasty after the breakdown of relationship between Tang Dynasty and Nanzhao. Secondly, the thesis starts with the serious situations which West Xichuan faces and deep study of Wei Gao’s governance for West Xichuang and the measures to come over and pledge allegiance of Nanzhao.Finally, Wei Gao makes Nanzhao again return to Tang Dynasty and both of them jointly combat Tibetan regime in ancient China, and the analysis of the effect of the Southern Front of the war between Tang Dynasty and Tibetan regime in ancient China and the whole situation of the war.The thesis discusses the Wei Gao’s evaluation. Relevant historical records are tend to be fragmented while some historical records are partial, hence, the thesis is based on the material collecting and his lifetime to discuss a comprehensive understanding and assessment of Wei Gao by using the method of historical analysis of historical figures.
