In today’s society where science and technology is highly developed, CG technology is gaining greater popularity while many traditional painting skills have fallen into disuse from animation production, being replaced by the vivid light effect and hair and skin texture. Cool as it seems to be, such a result would be boring, since the industrialized processing made animation that should be lively seem rather cheap. Up till now, 3D animation blockbusters led by the US still hold the dominant position of the animation film market. Well-knit plot and gorgeous shot transition dazzled the audience. Just like machines could hardly replace handmade crafts, films like Father and Daughter and The Old Man and the Sea remain classical over the years in terms of its art values thanks to their peculiar pictorial art. So whether we should explore some other possibilities that could bring psychological pleasure to the audience: a return to the original painting impulse; a warm feeling from the fraction of pencil and paper; a mind wandering in the brush strokes and lines. In order to explore the effect of different drawing features on the animation art style, based on real cases, this paper tries to make an in-depth research and exploration of the 2D animation art style from the perspective of drawing materials, picture formation and the development of times respectively, in combination of the author’s exploration and inspirations in the process of making the 2D animation short film by the name of A Miner’s Story. It is hoped that this paper could provide some suggestions and references for those working in the area of animation in their practice of art.
