In this paper, by discussing the close relation between “human-orientation” and documentary photography, it finds out the significance for photographic design. Afterwards, the production process of the individual work Maternal Mosuo is analyzed, and the impact of the gradual practice of “human-oriented” spirit on the photography works, which may provide spiritual support and theoretical guidance for the future creation.After tracing the “human-oriented” history and status, it tries to summarize the definition in contemporary context: “human-oriented”, namely human-centered, refers that the respect of the survival, freedom and equality of people, as well as the attention to individuality, and the attempt of promoting overall harmonious development of human, is the human-centered value idea and ideology. John Thomson, Diane Arbus, Zhuang Xueben, Hou Dengke, and Lv Lan are all called the photographers with humanistic care, for they have interpreted the influence of “human-oriented” spirit in documentary photography in different ways. It can be seen that the human-oriented spirit is the strong support relied by the documentary photographer, and it is a requirement on the quality of photographer, as well as the code of conduct guiding the entire process of photography creation.Reviewing the development from nothing of the documentary photography Maternal Mosuo, it is realized that the photography process is also the process of exploring the return of “human-oriented” spirit, from the early-stage unconsciousness to the later-stage deep reflection. It is discovered that: at first, communicating with Mosuo sincerely and respecting them is a key element for the integration in Mosuo group and constant expansion and deepening of photograph project.
