Online academic discussion is an important type for exchanging academic information, which provides all peers an ideal opportunity to communicate directly through forums. There are some similarities in the use of negative politeness strategies by topic creators and respondents. There are some differences in the employment of bald on record, positive politeness strategies and smiley strategy. Finally, the reasons for topic creators’ and respondents’ choices of linguistic politeness are analyzed. These can be attributed to the context of dialogin, participants’ different positions, and the features of language in online communication.
