Translation Report On The American Congress (Chapter Nine:Congress And The President)

This is a report on the translation of the book The American Congress’ s Chapter Nine: Congress and the President. This book is written by American political scientist Steven S. Smith, political scholar Jason M. Roberts and fellow graduate from Weidenbaum Center of Washington University. Chapter Nine of this book gives a systematical and detailed introduction to the complex relationships between American legislative body Congress and executive chief the president in the aspects of legislation, administration, domestic affairs, diplomacy, policy-making and so forth. For American readers and foreign readers who are interested in American politics, this book is a serious textbook for understanding American politics.Guided by the three principles of translation of A. F. Tytler, a great British translator of the eighteenth century, this report has a discussion of techniques and problems during the process of translation.This report is constituted of two parts. Part one is constituted of source text and translated text. Part Two is the translation report which includes four sections. Section One introduces the background, significance, theme and style of the translation task. Section Two is the preparation of translation. In Section Three there are case studies of resolution of difficult long sentences and political terminologies. Section Four is a summary of the author’s harvest and experiences acquired. It also gives recommendations and suggestion for future work.The author hopes that through acquaintance and comprehension of American politics, some misunderstanding between Chinese and American people can be eliminated.
