Stylistic Reproduction In The Chinese Version Of Runaway -from The Perspective Of Stylistic Markedness Theory

Since Alice Munro got the Nobel Prize in Literature, this Canadian female writer came to light among the Chinese readers. Before this, only one short-story collection of hers-Runaway (also her most representative work) translated by Li Wenjun in 2009 could be found in the bookstores in mainland China Moreover, almost nobody conducted comprehensive research in this Chinese version due to its niche market and newly familiarity; even though actually Li Wenjun’s other translated versions were often studied. Nonetheless, this thesis holds that the translation methods, especially the style translation employed by a male translator to grasp the feminine subject must be worthy of studying.What the style is exactly and whether the style can be translated-this has always been an important issue in the translation circle. Stylistic translation is an indispensable part of literary translation. Translators have always been striving to make the style translation possible, but there has been a lack of scientific and theoretical guidance for a long time.A decade ago, Liu Miqing’s Stylistic Markedness Theory comes out, proving scientifically the translatability of the style as well as providing the specific methods to reproduce the style. Based on the analysis and summary of the text, the system of stylistic markers involves non-formal markers and formal markers, being presented on three levels-the top, the middle and the bottom. However, the Stylistic Markedness Theory has not attracted enough attention yet for there are not enough analyses on translating practices under its guidance.This thesis, using Liu Miqing’s Stylistic Markedness Theory, provides a practical analysis on Li Wenjun’s translation of Runaway. It is concluded that, by careful and thorough study of the English and the Chinese versions of Runaway, Li has noticed and reproduced the stylistic features of the original to a large extent As it turns out, with the help of the Stylistic Markedness Theory, the style is indeed translatable.In addition, the Theory, with its effective translating methods, plays a significant role in making the style reproduction possible.
