Amy tan is one of the most outstanding representatives in the groups of Chinese American writers. Her works not only deeply reflected the Chinese American life experience, also were actively involved in the construction of Chinese American culture. Therefore, she was appreciated and welcomed by the readers of different ages, different ethnic groups, and different education background and occupied a special and important position in the study of contemporary Chinese American literature. In these novels, The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God’s Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, The Bonesetter’s Daughter, Saving Fish from Drowning, etc., Amy tan made a vivid and moving description of the mother-daughter relationship in Chinese family, added stable and rich Chinese culture elements, and narrated Angle unique and rich cultural imagination unique, stories, legends, expression and variety of the world literary appreciation. Amy tan overturned the traditional men writing, men being predominate and women being secondary. In her writings, men are not the main characters in the novel, and even most of the male image lacks of masculinity. The research object of this thesis is Amy tan’s five novels. Employed the related theory, comparative literature, narrative, feminism, colonialism, cultural criticism, and so on, through a intensive reading of her works, this thesis analyzes the male image problem of the novel. The main body is divided into three parts, that is, the first chapter discusses the value orientation of male image. Under the "no parent text" overall architecture, this thesis analyzes the image of fathers, the loss of voice and becoming a "oyster", and the loss of men’s masculine traits, and the "deadwood" husband image, not only failing to become a women’s comfort but also the source of pain in women. On the basis of the above analysis, this thesis makes an overall summary of the male characters in the novel text. The second chapter introduces the construction of male image. Combined with the classical narrative theory, based on the analysis of the "mother and daughter double narrative layer and of the multiple first limited angle analysis, and combined with oriental women writers of the Wang Anyi and other characters shape, this thesis reveals the transfer and inheritance of the speaking right and the deep connotation of the subjective and mysterious autobiography. The third chapter is about the deep analysis of the male image problem. From the dualistic thinking construction exploration of the characters, under the western centralism male image construction, the relation between the two sexes reflection, these three aspects, this thesis builds up the "unable to rely on" male image and analyzes its deep-seated reasons in Amy Tan’s novels. It is beneficial to research the troubles and causes of the Chinese female writer’s male image, aiming to avoid excessive integration of American mainstream values of Chinese culture. At the same time this can also make westerners realize the Chinese male image, truly tolerance, modesty, being gentle and strong and brave masculinity, and also provides a reference to the comparison of eastern and western feminine literatures.
