Xiao Hong lived a short life for only thirty years while she spent ten of them on writing. She left before she could further her writing, leaving us great works like Tales of Hulan River, Life and Death Fair and Ma-Pole. She was a special “shooting star” in the history of modern Chinese fiction, insisting on writing in her own way and walking on her own path. Though she died early, she brought immortal influence into the world.Researches of Xiao Hong have covered many aspects, ranging from her life, love, text, aesthetic style and art pursuit to feminism. This paper analyzes male characters, which have been long ignored in her works. Trying to read Xiao Hong from a different perspective, this paper includes four parts:Part one lists the male characters in Xiao Hong’s work. Family was special to Xiao Hong. She spent the whole life looking for her home in mind. This paper interprets these characters from both “the inner family” and “the outer family”. Part two discloses the unique feature of Xiao Hong’s male characters by analyzing these characters under the context of her life. Part three starts from her life to inquire the origin of these characters under the special historical background. Part four analyzes the changes of gender relations that revealed Xiao Hong’s writing psychology so as to achieve gender harmony.Xiao Hong lived in the age when China suffered greatly from intensified class oppression; the whole nation was in jeopardy. Such environment offered her fertile soil to nurture art instead of a safe and warm home. Her growth circumstance endowed her acute eyes from which nothing like social injustices, difference between wealth and poverty, class oppression and nation’s struggle could escape. In a manner of speaking, the society bred Xiao Hong’s life-long suffering, but her suffering molded her accomplishments.
