| Fat talk is broadly defined as a communication exchange with the focus on individuals’ physical appearance especially critique pertaining to body fat, weight,shape, style, or fitness. These frequent and socially acceptable, yet disparaging,conversations appear to center around five basic themes among undergraduate students :self-comparison to ideal eating and exercise habits,fears of becoming overweight,comparing one’s eating and exercise habits to others,strategies for replacing meals and building muscle,and most commonly, the evaluation of others’ appearance who are absent from the conversation. Research suggests that fat talk is much more common among women than men and more common among adolescent and young adult women than older women. The effect of fat talk is not clear, especially on the influence of the state of the body, due to the measurement standardization and the limitation of the tested features in the exposure, On the one hand, studies have found that fat talk can predict the body is not satisfied with the conversation, compared to a neutral conversation, exposure to fat talk can reduce body satisfaction; But also researchers found the positive function of fat talk, relative to neutral conversation, heard fat talk of individual can reduce negative emotions, May individual to a positive self-behavior, In some cases, women are talking to each other, but communicating with each other.Uncertainty about the role of fat talk can be explained from the perspective of social comparison. Social comparison is that people need to self evaluation, and the evaluation is mainly inclined to society, through the comparison with other state(i.e.social comparison) to complete. Social comparison is an unconscious process, everyone will make social comparison, but some people tend to make more social comparison.Social comparisons are considered an integral part of the fat talk. the fat talk will be perceived themselves with other people or imagined people compare process, thiscomparison can refer to a part on their own(their stature, body weight, weight loss strategy etc.), It means that the fat talk only shows the results of the comparison. So, fat talk as a social phenomenon, provides people with social comparison information, the information society, women evaluate their body, At present, there is no relevant research on the role of social comparison in the study of the relationship between fat talk and body dissatisfaction, So this research by exploring fat talk influences on body dissatisfaction, especially social comparison in the moderating role of and for the future of body image disorders and eating disorders prevention and intervention to provide theoretical basis.Social comparison includes social comparison characteristics and social comparison direction. Social comparison characteristics, namely the tendency of social comparison, as well as the direction of social comparison. The tendency of social comparison refers to the personality tendency of individuals to carry out social comparison, which is divided into high social tendency and low social tendency according to the frequency which is compared with others. Individuals with high social tendency tend to compare themselves with others.Social comparison direction includes upward social comparison and downward social comparison. Upward comparison can be said for the upward comparison, is defined in one dimension will own and than their better individuals are compared,individual and is superior to the others, to achieve the purpose of self-improvement;downward comparison also known as downward comparison, is refers to in a dimension will own and worse than their individual were compared, in order to maintain self-esteem and subjective well-being. This study examines the social comparison trait and social comparison direction in fat talk about the specific role of body dissatisfaction in the process of the influence, and further explores the moderating effects of social comparison.A study on induced fat talk about scene was analyzed, the results showed that the high representative scene in stability, similar low representative scene were significantly higher and the possibility of dimensions(t(172) = 6.509, p<.01; t(172) = 4.730, p<.01t(172) = 4.628, p<.01), successfully screened with high representative fat talk scene;study two analysis of fat talk on the body is not satisfactory, compared with high and low in the social role, to compare the fat talk and social repeated measurement of variance analysis results show that the main effect of fat talk obviously, compared with the non fat talk, talk about obesity can increase body dissatisfaction(F(1, 63) =5.64, p=.021); talk about obesity and social comparison significant interaction(F(1,63) =5.21,p =.026). Further simple effect analysis showed that tend to low social individuals, fat talk is not significant on body dissatisfaction about the role of(F(1,63) =.004, p =.951);social comparison orientation individuals, obesity on the body is not satisfied about the significant effect(F(1,63) =12.16, p =.001), experiment three based on two experiments to further explore the tendency for high social individuals, social comparison direction in the role of fat talk, repeated measures analysis of variance showed that fat talk about significant main effect(F(1, 57) =15.28, p =.000); fat talk and social comparison direction interaction significant(F(1,57) =5.42, p=.023). Further simple effect analysis,the subjects in fat talk of upward comparison, body changes significantly(F(1,57)=18.51, p =.000); downward comparison, results not significant(F(1,57) =1.32, p=.256). This study provides a new perspective on body image and eating disorders.Through the above research, through the analysis and discussion, the following conclusions are obtained:First: the body is not satisfied with the negative effects of fat talk. When individuals are involved in fat talk, they are not satisfied with the level of the body;Second: social comparison has a moderating effect between fat talk and body dissatisfaction. |
