The handwriting, which is formed by the action of human writing using writinginstruments, is the manifestations of the text and symbols reflecting the psychologicalcharacteristics of personality of the writer.The handwriting reflects the inherent habits and characteristics of the writer, which isformed by the writer’s writing activities, under the domination of a certain motivation,usingtheir writing skills. The handwriting is the external manifestations of personal writingactivities. Writing activity is a kind of human mental activity which is relevant with thewriter’s temperature and personality.Handwriting analysis is specialized technic which cananalyse the writer ‘s personality, temperature, emotion, behavior and social competencethrough comprehensive observation and in-depth study of handwriting feature reflecting thelaws of writing activities.Handwriting analysis is widely used in Europe and the United States and Israel.Graphology, the specialized knowledge of Handwriting Analysis,has been seen as alegitimate branch of psychology and is generally taught in colleges and universities. In ourcountry, handwriting analysis started late and the scope of research and application ofhandwriting is narrow, especially the lack of the application of handwriting analysis inidentification and recognition.This paper, taking advantage of empirical data studies, aimsto explore the relationship between handwriting and the writer’spersonality and to explorehandwriting analysis’s value in identification and recognition so as to help the investigation ofthe cases.This paper is divided into four parts:The first part discusses the concept of handwriting analysis.In order to be sure of thedefinition of handwriting analysis,on the basis of the proposed concept of handwritinganalysis, the write try to tell the difference between handwriting analysis and handwritingidentification, handwriting analysis and tellers surgery, handwriting analysis and handwritingrecognition. At the same time,the author investigated philosophy, psychology, physiology theoretical basisfor handwriting analysis in this part, so as to strengthen the theoreticalsupport for handwriting analysis and to prove the scientifoc of handwriting analysis.In the second part,the origion as well as recent research and application of handwritinganalysis were introduced. The origins and the research and application of the domestichandwriting analysis as well as the origins and research methods, research results, practicalapplication status of foreign handwriting analysis were briefly described.In the third part,the author analyse statistics data from surveys, using actual data toprove the relationship between handwriting and personality as well as the difference in thehandwriting characteristics between violent criminals and college students. In this part,handwriting characteristics of handwriting samples were selected and and quantified.And theauthor explored the reletivity between the results from the internationally accepted SPSS19.0statistical analysis software and score of h the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Inaddition, the violent criminals’ handwriting characteristics and college students’ handwritingcharacteristics were tested independently,so as to find out the differences between them.In part four,the autuor discussed the value of handwriting analysis, combined withthe empirical findings of handwriting analysis, in identification and recognition,and tried toput the theory into practice as well as to provide references for investigating the cases. As forthe value of handwriting analysis in identification, two aspects were discussed, one aspect isthat the combination of handwriting analysis theory could enhance the reliability of expertconclusion, another aspect is the use of handwriting analysis could make a breakthrough insolving the problem of disguised handwriting identification. As for value of handwritinganalysis in recognition,the contents were also divided into two areas and discussed with case,one aspect is the use of handwriting analysis for narrowing the scope of the investigation todetermine the direction of the investigation, another aspect is the value of handwritinganalysis in the investigation and interrogation.
