Through several centuries secularization, the power contrast between church andcivil authorities were biger and bieger, the traditional power structure between themwere abosolutely overturned. Hobbes lived and writed in an era of turning point, hewas convulsed by the lasting and brutal religion wars in West Europe, especially theCivil War. In order to deal with the problems and get welfare for human beings,Hobbes devised a great Leviathan by reason. From the writings about Hobbes’sovereign in west world, it found that Hobbes’ sovereign is a abosolute sovereign ora limited sovereign isn’t very clear, if we want to answer this problem, we have tounderstand two concepts in Hobbes’ writings, Nature and Reason, they arecorner-stone of Hobbes’ natural law. Thereof, it attempt to understand and elaboratethe inner logic of Hobbes’ sovereign under the perspectives of the cosmology fromGreek to the modern time, through analyzing the writings. The structure of this work is arranged as follows:Introduction. This part briefly introduces the basic actuality of the issue exploredin this discourse in west and China, and then account the basic thread of this discourse. The first part aims to construct a integral perspectives for understanding Hobbes’idea by illustrating the secularization process from13century to17century, andelaborate the Religion Revolution. The second part is about modern cosmology and Hobbes’ natural law. Firstly, itwill elaborate the evolution of cosmology from the Greek to the Modern time. Thenillustrate Hobbes’ natural state and natural law, especially elaborate Nature andReason these two key words in Hobbes’ wringts under the perspective of cosmologyevolution. The third part will discuss the relationship between natural law and civil law.Firstly, it will analyse the writings about this issue in the west world. And thenelaborate the aosolutity of Hobbes’ sovereign base on the undedstanding about Ntureand Reason, but I found that this issue isn’t so clear. In my opinion,if we want to dealwith this issue we have to face Hobbes’ religion arguments. The fourth part attempts to study the Hobbes’ arguments about abosolutesovereign under the perspective of religion arguments. In this part, it will studyHobbes’ religion arguments deeply, and then get the conclution that only civil sovereign have authority to elaborate the natural laws as God’s dictates, so civilsovereign have abosolute power. So far the true face of Hobbes’ abosolute sovereignwill clear. The last part intends to illustrate that Hobbes’ abosolute sovereign is thecorner-stone of legal positivism, and then offer a critical reflection on Hobbes’ greatLeviathan under the perspectives of domestic order and international order.
