Since China officially joined the Internet in 1994, the use of the Internet in China has experienced a rapid development. With the using of Internet by public expanding from the initial simple information transmission to a more complex form of interaction gradually, the originally distributed views and demands were converged into a strong pressure of public opinion through the Internet, which resulted in the emergence of virtual social contradictions. Research on the Internet in China at the present stage focuses mostly on the relationship between virtual and real society, while the study on the virtual social contradictions has not yet been mature. The contradictions between different interest groups in reality, through the expression, derivation, or variation resorting to the virtual network, turn to the virtual social contradictions. As a special form of real social contradictions, virtual social contradictions, constituted mainly by four elements of subject, object, content and carrier, are interrelated with as well as different from the social contradictions in reality. With the features of anonymity, suddenness, and multi-dimension, virtual social contradictions can be divided into unitary and compound types, argumental and polar types, or local and extensive types. The generation of virtual social contradictions will experience a process of occurrence, development, climax, and the end as its four stages. In general, the effects of virtual social contradictions on human society, compared to a double-edged sword, can be both positive and negative.Based on the present status of virtual social contradictions in China, it can be found that many problems exist in the virtual social governance, including the lack of awareness of the importance of virtual social contradictions, the defects in regulations for the virtual society, the distance between expected effects and reality, and the deficiency of holistic thinking for supervision of the real and virtual social contradictions. The main reasons of the lack of governance for virtual social contradictions lie in the decisive role of real social contradictions, the delay of upper design for virtual social contradictions, and the lack of capacity in controlling and governing. The governance of virtual social contradictions in China should be launched from different aspects: insisting the combination and interaction of real and virtual contradictions horizontally, and adhering to the prevention and emergency treatment for virtual social contradictions simultaneously. The problems can also be tackled by ways of morality, regulations, and operational mechanism. The system of norms and layout of strategy concerning the governance of virtual social contradictions in China are expected to be established and perfected as soon as possible.
