This paper mainly studies the thought of capital and space of David Harvey. I will study how Harvey gradually turns from a positivist geographers to Marxist position through the study of the city. Harvey is able to achieve to the theory, I think that it is not only because of its individual efforts, but also he was in the transformation of whole western thought, Specifically, Foucault and others open the turning of post-modern space thinking. This paper mainly focuses on Harvey’s theory of economic crisis in "Limits to capital", and I will clarify the construction of crisis theory of Harvey. Harvey believes that the crisis is showed though development of geographical imbalance. From the theory of geographical imbalance to the theory of imperialism, Harvey needs the help of Marx’s "Das Kapital", in order to from the theory of geographical imbalance to theory of imperialism. Therefore, the crisis theory of Harvey, on the one hand, inherited from the crisis theory of Marx, on the other hand, it makes a response to the financial crisis of capitalism in the new era. Harvey believes that the contemporary capitalism needs institutional support in overcoming its crisis, that is imperialism. Imperialism is a new form of the operation of capitalism in overcoming its crisis. To undertake the above problems, this paper further studies through thinking breaking the domination of global capital, how Harvey to look for ideas of alternatives, how Harvey to use thought resources of the traditional Utopia in order to build his own unique Utopia theory of time-space.With the helping of the basic point of Marxism, this paper makes a brief analysis of the geographical-historical materialism of Harvey and the thought of community revolution. Harvey contacts the production of space with Marx’s theory of capital accumulation, it not only widens the vision of space theory, but also shows the spatial dimension of Marx’s theory. Harvey understands the contemporary capitalism through the spatialization of historical materialism. It not only has a unique perspective, but also it re-activate the Marxism, so the value of theory is self-evident. Be different from Marx and Engels, Harvey did not catches the reality through historical discourse, so Harvey’s theory lacks historical dimension and it has significant limitations. And his theory of community revolution and the theory of liberation politics activate again Marxist revolutionary discourse, but also it likewise faces the double dilemma in theory and practice owing to utopia. |
