Research On The Thought Of Hobbes’ State-legitimacy-building

Hobbes is a political thinker in the period from traditional to modern transformation. By absorbing the methods of modern science and philosophy and applying them to political study, he completed the elaboration of political philosophy in modern significance. Therefore, he is recognized as a pioneer of modern political philosophy. Moreover, as a thinker in the period of the rise of bourgeois, he is the first one to reject to the theological doctrine. He "has observed countries from the perspective of human, rationality and experience rather than the derived from a theology of nature". State-building plays an important part in the theory of Hobbes’s political philosophy. According to the logical clue from natural law to the social contract, and the premise of the abstract theory of human nature and the natural state hypothesis, he built a country named "Leviathan" which was based on justice, underpinned by legitimacy.The legality of state-building is the reflection of political legitimacy on the national issues. Actually, the legitimacy of state power, authority of the state and political order were proved, and the questions why would be subject to political authority was answered with Hobbes ’thought of state-building. The meaning of his political philosophy has been easily understood with the help of demonstration of Hobbes’ state-building. The study on Hobbes’thought of state-legitimacy-building not only helps for understanding the origin and development of ideological and political theory of the modern state legitimacy, but also helps tap their learning and enlightenment ideas on national development, especially in the contemporary world of the legitimacy of the modern state-building and governance of the countries in transition.There are four parts in the paper. The first part is the background of Hobbes’thought of state-building. Based on the social historical background and ideological resources of Hobbes’ philosophy, the methodological basis of state-building thought are discussed with the combination of political realism and political idealism, mechanical materialism, and decomposition and integration methods. Then, the thought of Hobbes’ state-building has been explained on the basis of the meaning and the evolution of the concept "legitimacy".The second part is the explanation of the ontology building on Hobbes’State legitimacy. The theory of human nature is the theoretical basis of Hobbes’state-building. Based on the analysis of this theory, this paper reveals how Hobbes built the legitimacy of state power, the construction of social and political order through social contract, a national system design and implementation of laws with the analysis of the natural body and real body building.The third part is the explanation of the value building on thought of Hobbes’state legitimacy. This paper explains Hobbes’value on the legitimacy of states-building from three aspects:peace and security is the country’s highest value claim; justice is the moral foundation of state-building; the relationship between authority and freedom reflects the value construction of the relationship between state and citizen.The fourth part is a brief discussion of the influence and inspiration on the legitimacy of Hobbes’ state-building. Hobbes’ thought not only affects the thought of modern state-building theory and the development of political and ideological thought of legitimacy, but also has implications for enhancing national capacity and building social value for the contemporary state.
