Democracy is the ideal and objective that human society has been pursuing. The communist party of China has been sticking to the pursuit of and the practice of democracy since it be found of. In the party’s history, the first generation of Chinese communists represented by Mao Zedong combined the basic principles of marxism with Chinese concrete practice to form the democratic ideas with Chinese characteristics which are different from Western capitalist democracy,and constantly practice in the historical process of revolution and construction. It has been widely recognized by the masses, enriched and developed the Marxist theory of democracy while laying the mass foundation for the Chinese people’s revolution and construction.Yan’an period is an important stage in the history of the Chinese Communist Party and also an important period for the further development of Mao Zedong’s democratic thought. During this period, the theory source of Mao Zedong’s democratic thought mainly include the basic principle of marxism-leninism theory of democracy, democracy consciousness and the people-based thought in ancient China, western bourgeois democratic thought and democratic ideas in modern Chinese history, Mao Zedong’s new understanding of "democracy" in national revolution and the early stage of the agrarian revolutionary war. The practice basis is the state of the nation and the situation of the Chinese society in Anti-Japanese War and liberation war period. In Yan’an period, Mao Zedong’s democratic thought mainly includes the political democracy, economic democracy and cultural democracy thought, grassroots democracy and inner-party democracy thought, etc., and it is a comprehensive and systematic democracy.Accordingly, the democracy practice under the guidance of Mao Zedong’s democratic thought is mainly embodied in the establishment of a democratic regime and expand the political participation of the masses, to implement constitutional innovation legal system, strengthening economic construction to improve the livelihood of the people,construction of mass culture, promote rural grassroots democracy management, combining the construction of democracy and centralization of inner-party democracy, etc. Mao Zedong’s democratic thought and the democratic practice under the guidance of that in Yan’an period has outstanding features, the democratic thought has universal nature, and the democracy practice is scientific and authentic, In Yan’an period, Mao Zedong’s democratic thought and the democratic practice under the guidance of that has historical significance such as respecting the principal position of the masses as well as providing institutional guarantee in arousing the enthusiasm of each class. Research Mao Zedong’s democratic thought and the democratic practice under the guidance of that in this period has current significance such as strengthening democracy construction, carrying out the party’s mass line of educational activities, etc.
