In 1950 s, with the signing of the "ANZUS Security Treaty", Australia became the political and military ally of the United States.During the Cold War, Australia supported the United States struggling for supremacy with the Soviet Union in the South China Sea, frequently participated in the large-scale military exercises held by the United States in the South China Sea, becoming the right-hand man helping the United States invasion of the South China Sea.After 1970 s, Australia began to "face to Asia", and strove to develop Australia-Asia relations, and constantly improved their international environment. After the end of the cold war, Australia continued to strengthen the Australia-US alliance and constantly improved its national defense construction level and international influence, tried to play its "middle power" role in various international occasions and dispute. Due to close to Southeast Asia, Australia is closely concerned with the South China Sea issue closely related to its national interests. Since the United States announced that "the return to the Asia Pacific", Australia has begun to intervene in the South China Sea issue.The main content of Australia’s policy in the South China Sea is:Australia is actively involved in the South China Sea issue, does not choose any side in the South China Sea sovereignty dispute; Australia claims based on international law, through the establishment of a multi-party negotiation mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of the South China Sea disputes and strongly opposes any behavior unilateral changing the status quo; Australia pays close attention to the freedom of navigation in the South China Sea and continues to emphasize the relevance of its national security, tries to borrow the South China Sea issue to enhance its international influence;Australia actively consolidates Australia-US alliance and supports the United States continuing to intervene in the South China Sea affairs, and continues to strengthen its defense forces building to match the positions and actions of the United States;Australia is also actively developing military relations with neighboring countries in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean,combined with Japan, India and other countries to guard against the rise of China.At the same time, Australia does not want to provoke China on the South China Sea issue, so as not to endanger the relations between the two countries and their own economic interests.On the South China Sea issue, Australia hopes to profit by balancing the forces of the United States and China.Australia’s involvement in the South China Sea disputes is inseparable linked with its national interests in the South China Sea, also deeply influenced by the deepening of the Australia-US alliance and the United States’ return to the Asia Pacific in recent years,also closely related to the rise of China and the development trend of China-US relations.Since the implementation of Australia’s policy in South China Sea, the South China Sea and the Asia Pacific’s security trend has been changed a lot, the normal development of China-Australian relations also has been deeply influenced,bringing new uncertainty factors to solve the South China Sea issue. Faced with this situation, China should properly handle relations with Australia, the United States and other countries in the South China Sea, efforts to control, weaken the negative impact brought about by the intervention of Australia, to promote the development of China-Australian relations.
