The party system of Singapore has been concerned by many scholars in our country, however, people that regard the party system of Singapore as predominant-party system and specialize in it are rare. This paper studies predominant-party system of Singapore, and analyzes its formation, characteristics, functions and challenges it faces, and looks forward to its developing change. Studying predominant-party system of Singapore has certain academic value and practical significance. Fistly, studying predominant-party system of Singapore to a certain extent will enrich the domestic research in predominant-party system and party system of Singapore. Secondly, studying functions and challenges of predominant-party system of Singapore will provide enlightment for other countries where one party rules for a long time maintain political stability. This paper includes five parts:the first part is introductory theory which includes the research goal and significance, domestic and foreign research situation, research methods and ideas, and the definition of basic concepts; the second part discusses the formation and reasons for predominant-party system of Singapore; the third part analyzes characteristics of predominant-party system of Singapore; the fourth part discusses functions of predominant-party system of Singapore; the fifth part analyzes challenges predominant-party system of Singapore faces; the last part is the conclusion which summarizes the above and gives the perpective to the developing change of predominant-party system of Singapore. This paper argues that:the first, the formation of predominant-party system of Singapore was a process, during which factors including histories, national conditions and parties made effects; the second, predominant-party system of Singapore has the characteristics of one party dominance, limited competition, authoritarianism and elitist democracy; the third, predominant-party system of Singapore is conducive to the stability of Singapore society, the long-term policy of Singaporean government and the democratization of Singapore’politics; the fourth, since the 1980 s, predominant-party system of Singapore is facing two challenges which are growing of the opposition force and higher democracy appealed by new social situations, but predominant-party system of Singapore won’t happen fundamental changes in the short term.
