English plays an important role in our information society. Reading is one of themain approaches to acquire English. However, the English reading is influenced bytraditional teaching method and the students are lack of schema knowledge at the sametime. The schema in reading comprehension has attracted more and more linguists andinstructors abroad and at home to do the researches. The schemata means the knowledgestored in man’s mind. The thesis analyses the situation and problems of English readingteaching. Furthermore, it indicates the necessity of schema-oriented reading teachingmethod. With reference to the schema theory, this thesis mainly explores a new readingteaching method based on schema. The thesis is intended to improve the traditionalmethod of teaching reading by adopting effective teaching methods to develop in studentsthe ability to use appropriate reading strategies and grasp the skills of readingcomprehension. The research of the thesis was conducted in two classes by the ways ofquestionnaire, interview, pre-test and post-test. The most important part is the pre-test andpost-test. By means of questionnaire and interview, the students’ requirement of readingclass and attitude of schema-oriented reading teaching will be known. The result ofpre-test and post-test is analyzed by SPSS17.0. After analysis of the research result, theauthor comes to the following conclusion: the linguistic schema, content schema andformal schema are the main factors that hinder English reading; the reading instructionbased on schema theory can achieve more efficiency in developing students’ reading skilland ability.At the end of the thesis, the author proposes some suggestions on the basis ofschema theory. Some of these methods are proved to be effective in the class, and someothers are deduced from the experiment and teaching process. The author hopes bothteachers and students can use schemata correctly so as to guide senior English readinginstruction and improve students’independent reading ability.
