To adapt the challenge from Knowledge Economy and catch the new chance, countriesall over the world gradually focus on the policies on improving scientific and technologicalstrength. Basic Research, which is the origin of knowledge economy, has been the focus area.Though lots of policies and measures which aims at improving scientific and technologicalstrength has been implemented one by one since the reform and opening-up policy, theinnovation capacity of China still stays in a low level. The scientific gap between developedcountries and developing countries has been expanded. Constant resources from centralgovernment and local government have been increasing in recent year. Performance appraisalof universities has been put forward and widely focused. The cooperation between university and industry is the origin and main component ofUIC (University-Industry Cooperation). This paper aims at analyze the characteristics andinnovative pattern classification of University-Industry Cooperation based on the group ofuniversities from985program and the Science Citation Index Expend Database. In the end,the Latent Class Mode will be introduced to classify the innovative pattern of UIC. Based onthe classification results, universities of the985Program will be divided into differentinnovative pattern classification. The research results show characteristics of University-Industry Cooperation from threedimensions as following. From the dimension of total output, thought universities in Chinahave an increasing ratio on UIC in terms of the field of basic research, there is a large gapwhen compared to the world-class universities. From the dimension of cooperation, resultsshow that universities in China gradually study with a multi-cooperation mode. The strongerthe ability of university has, the more likely for it to participate in UIC. Besides, the level ofinvolvement in international cooperation becomes higher and higher, which mainlycooperated with international authors from America, Japan, and British. From the dimensionof paper impact, the qualities of SCIE articles from universities in China have been increasing, and paper impact of some of universities has become stronger and stronger. However, universities in China have a low average level of paper impact as a whole. In this paper, an empirical research on the innovation pattern classification of universities inChina was conducted based on the Latent Class Analysis (LCA). According to the empiricalresult, Cluster-6was the perfect model on the base of the BIC index appraisal. Furthermore, asecondary classification based on the propensity of universities in terms of five Classificationproperties, and four types of innovative pattern was put forward in accord with the matchingrelation between synergetic resources and impact performance. Thesis research results notonly enrich the university-enterprise cooperation study in China, but also provide somereferences to the government in the field of resources allocation to university-enterprisecooperation in the future.
