In China, the teaching of English vocabulary has always played an important rolein English teaching. However, most students in senior high schools have somedifficulties in vocabulary learning, for the simple reason that teachers still use sometraditional methods in vocabulary teaching. With the development of New CurriculumReform, the final goal of vocabulary teaching is no longer just memorizing spellingsand meanings but understanding and using vocabularies accurately as well.Nowadays, Situational Teaching Method in English teaching has become moreand more popular in China, which is based on Constructivist Learning Theory,especially in primary and junior high schools, since it was recommended from abroadlast century. The effectiveness of this teaching method has been confirmed by manyan expert. However, there is still a doubt whether it is the same proper for senior highschools. This paper tries to study on the availability of applying Situational TeachingMethod in English vocabulary teaching in senior high school for one semester.This study adopts test, questionnaire, and interview as the research methods andlooks on two parallel classes who are from Grade Two in The Third High School ofLvshun as research subjects, aiming at exploring the effectiveness of The SituationalMethod on application of English vocabulary and also discussing in what aspectsteachers should pay attention to in the actual teaching and learning.By analyzing the data from the research, we have explored that it is also availableand suitable to apply the Situational Teaching Method in vocabulary teaching.Teachers create lively situations in which students can learn vocabulary byexperiencing the language. Not only can it stimulate students’ enthusiasm in learningvocabulary but also it is helpful to achieve the target availably.This study shows that teachers should put the target words into certain situation inorder to improve the usage of these words. Accordingly, the efficiency of vocabularyteaching can be promoted.
