As one of the five basic and essential skills in English learning, English writing teaching has alwaysbeen put as an important part in English teaching. It not only needs students’ basic knowledge in English,but also needs some essential writing strategies to improve their English writing abilities and level.However, the situation on students’ English writing is not so optimistic. So, how to help students useeffective writing strategies to improve their writing level is still a problem.Much research has been conducted on the writing strategies since1970s. These studies indicate thatthe suitable usage of the writing strategies can influence the improvement of students’ English writing a lot.The linguists convert their attention from the teachers’ teaching to students’ learning gradually. As a part oflearning strategies, writing strategies have been paid little attention. So, the research of English writingstrategies and the training of English writing strategies in language teaching are of great significance in thepractical research.This study will focus on two research questions.(1) What are the major problems among the seniorhigh school students in their English writing?(2) What are the writing strategies which are most frequentlyused by the senior high school students in their English writing?(3) What are the differences betweensuccessful learners and unsuccessful learners in using of English writing strategies?Based on the theories and former researches, this study chooses120subjects to survey their using ofEnglish writing strategies. They are from the Xin Xiang No.3Senior High School in Henan province.These subjects are divided into two parts: the successful writers and the unsuccessful writers. And then, theauthor uses some charts and diagrams to analyze the research. The result shows that (1)most of the seniorhigh school students think English writing is not as important as other skills. And most students do not usewriting strategies consciously in their writing;(2) during those writing strategies, the metacognitivestrategies, monitoring strategies and the resourcing strategies are most frequently used by the students. Andthe successful and unsuccessful English writers use different strategies in their writing;(3) the successfuland unsuccessful English writers use different writing strategies in their writing. the successful learnersoften use metacognitive strategies in their writing, and the unsuccessful learners often use cognitive strategies in their writing.Teachers should teach their students writing strategies purposely and systematically and inspirestudents’ motivation on English learning. As for the students, they need learn and use writing strategiesconsciously in their writing, so that they can improve their writing level smoothly. At the end of the thesis,this study presents some suggestions for English teachers in the teaching of English writing.This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction. This part introduces thebackground information of this thesis and the main problems in English writing teaching. Chapter Two isthe literature review which makes a brief survey of the related study at home and abroad. Chapter Three isthe research design, which includes the research questions, research subjects, research instruments, theresearch methods and the research process. Chapter Four is the main part of this thesis. It analyzes anddiscusses the questionnaire and the interview in detail data and results. Chapter Five is the conclusion ofthis study. It summarizes the main findings of this study, and then points out using of effective writingstrategies can give a positive influence on the improving of students’ writing ability.
