Metaphor is closely connected with our life. In our daily oral communication,people use the metaphor consciously or subconsciously as a way of talking torepresent personal thinking and wisdom. Metaphor exists in a large amount of ancientliterature, which deeply influences the value orientation of “miao yu qu bi” inChinese culture. Also, Chinese metaphor culture, with a strong pragmatic element,pursuits the effect of speech and the expression of feeling, which reflects the theextensive and profound Chinese culture. In other words, the widespread use ofmetaphor contributes to the endless charm of Chinese culture.The studies of metaphor in China and the West have experienced a long progressfrom the perspective of rhetoric to the perspective of cognition. The metaphor, as acognitive way of being widely used, is an important tool for people to perceive theworld objectively.This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is the summary ofmetaphoric theory, including the concept of metaphor, the essence of metaphor andthe function of metaphor. The second part shows the metaphor phenomenon inChinese textbooks of secondary school from the perspective of rhetoric and cognition.The third part explores the teaching methods of metaphor from the perceptive ofreception, involving three aspects which are the teachers’ responsibility of having anew understanding of metaphor, the improvement of metaphor teaching ability andthe perfection of metaphor teaching assessment in language teaching system.
