Language is a major tool of human for thinking and communication. With thedevelopment of China, people’s social life and economic activities have hastened theinternationalization and globalization. Foreign language education with multiple cultural andsocial significances has become the basic qualification for people, with especially English asan international official language. So in China, English teaching and learning has been put ina more important position. Under the requirement of the new senior English syllabus, the goalof teaching senior high school English is to strengthen and increase the students’ knowledgeof English so that their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills can be improved. As oneof the four important skills, writing is an important means by which we can communicate andwhich can also reflect the students’ comprehensive language ability. It requires the students toanalyze the materials, process information and complete writing assignments seriouslyaccording to the requirement of the writing. Because of the importance of English writing inour English teaching, our English teacher should pay more attention to laying emphasis onEnglish writing teaching. But due to the multiple causes and the influence of many factors,the current English writing teaching is still a weak link in teaching. As for the current highschool writing teaching, we find a series of problems in it. First of all, most English teachersin English teaching only pay attention to listening, speaking and reading ability training,ignoring the students’ writing skill training. Besides, many students lack the consciousness ofwriting in English learning.Task-based language teaching is the study of foreign language teaching and secondlanguage acquisition. The idea was first proposed in1980s. Based on a lot of research andpractice, task-based language teaching for English has a significant impact on language teaching. Task-based teaching of English has inspired a new thought, which emphasizes theimportance of learning tasks. Namely learners should first consider how to do task, rather thanhow to learn some language form. Language teaching with task changes the basic concept oflanguage teaching. It focuses on the practice of language, which fully reflects the students asthe subjects in the process of language learning. Tasks in the task-based teaching activitiesand traditional teaching activities are different. In traditional teaching activities, tasks areindependent of each other or disjointed while in the task-based language teaching activities,tasks are connected with each other around a certain goal. The task has different stages orsteps. The traditional teaching activities are to teach the language to students directly, whilestudents are in passive position, which will not contribute to exploring their learning abilityon their own. The activities in task-based language teaching are to reflect the" Doing inlearning” principle. Since the implementation of the new curriculum standard in our country,many schools are in the exploration of the task-based teaching mode for English Teaching inmiddle schools in china.The subjects are120students from the experimental class and the controlling class, whoare in Grade1in Shangcai Senior Middle School in Zhumadian district, Henan Province.They are two ordinary classes with60students respectively. The students are of the samelevel. The two classes are taught by the same teacher. The test time was from September2013to January2014, which lasted for about5months. The researcher taught the experimentalclass with the task-based writing method, while the controlling class was taught in thetraditional writing way.Compared with the traditional writing teaching model, the results show:1. Compared with the traditional teaching method, task-based writing teaching methodcan improve students’ writing level.2. Compared with the traditional method of teaching writing, task-based writing teaching method can arouse students’ writing interest and the sense of cooperation;3. Compared with the traditional method of teaching writing, task-based teachingapproach can cultivate students’ habit of writing and the ability to solve problems better, thusimproving their writing motivation.The author believes that in the recent years a lot of scholars and teachers make greatcontributions to the task-based approach and make some great achievements, whereas manyof the experiments are carried out in the university English teaching. In this case, somestudies are based on the mother tongue or English as a second language. So the research onthe teaching of high school English writing is not sufficient. This paper is focused onproblems of the current English writing teaching in senior high school, hoping to find that thetask-based teaching method can really help to improve the students’ English writing ability.Therefore, the significance of this research lies in how to effectively use the task-basedteaching method in the teaching of English writing and finding some effective methods tosolve the problems in the writing teaching.
