As the core component of course recourses, textbook is the main material and tool for the school learners and teachers, and the central bridge between curriculum ideal and teaching practice as well. However, language textbook is most important part of practice of language curriculum, of which selection and arrangement have directly impact on the quality of language teaching.The Advance with English published by Yilin Press has been used in high schools in Hunan Province since2007. According to the General High School English Curriculum Standards (experimental draft), this teaching material was compiled in the new curriculum reformation. How are the topics in Advance with English arranged? Does the topic coverage have enough quantity, breadth and depth? Is the topic arrangement propped up by appropriate logic structure or main clue? Does the quantity of topic and topic categories coverage meet the standard requirement? All the problems mentioned above will be focused on in this paper.In the light of topic table in appendix IV of General High School English Curriculum Standards (experimental draft) in2003, on the basis of linguistic theory such as communicative language teaching, Krashen’s input hypothesis, and Tyler’s evaluation principle, the research took study on quantitative and qualitative analysis from module1-8in series of Advance with English. The results shows out that the quantity of topic and topic category coverage in Advance with English didnot reach the required standard of topic table of General High School English Curriculum Standards (experimental draft) set for topic coverage. Moreover, its topic arrangement does not have strong logicality in consistency, high recurrence rate or close relationship with other subjects. All the problems contravenes the disciplines of language learning for school learners and decrease the input information of language learning, and the input quality was also reduced. The problems brought about negative influence on language learning and large obstacle to the goal of language communication. In allusion to the problems of topic arrangement in Advance with English, this paper proposes the principles of the topic compilations in senior English textbook and specific suggestions on correlative topic arrangement.
