Language transfer is a complex phenomenon affected by many factors, such aslinguistic factors, social factors, individual differences and so on. It is always a hotissue in second language acquisition area to study the features of second languageacquisition and solve practical problems during the process of second languagewriting and language acquisition, the occurrence of mother tongue transfer is anundoubted fact. As we know, Chinese and English belong to two different languagefamilies, and there are great differences existing in various aspects such asvocabulary, syntax,morphology and so on. In English writings, Chinese studentsmake all kinds of errors. What types of errors do they often make? Are there anyregularity? Why do students make errors, and what are their sources? How does L1interference function in EFL writing? These questions are the major concerns of thisthesis.According to the literature review of relative researches both at home andabroad and based on the theory of contrast analysis, error analysis, interlanguage andso on, the writer makes certain the research purpose of exploring the influence ofmother tongues transfer in middle school students‘English writing, that is, to studyhow and to what extent mother tongue can influence students‘English writing. Theresearch questions are proposed. These questions are concerning the error types instudents‘English writing, their frequency, the reasons for errors, the influence ofmother tongues transfer, and so on. All the questions are answered subsequently.The paper analyzed60compositions, through an integration of quantitative andqualitative analysis, frequencies of errors and distributions are sorted out in linguisticcategories and error sources are analyzed. It is found that mother tongue transfer hasa bad effect on Chinese students’ compositions. The paper suggests that languageteachers should pay more attention to the teaching of vocabulary, grammar andwriting strategies to improve the students‘writing abilities.
