Primary school English teachers’ teaching conception is a frame,which build up intheir brain for thinking about the characteristics of teaching essence, that is, it refers toviews or opinions for the essence of teaching of primary school English teachers.Through the analysis of description about the essence of teaching of primary schoolEnglish teachers, that can summarize their representative and essential differencebetween the various types of teaching conceptions.Through the use of phenomenography, it combinate qualitative study andquantitative study to discuss teaching conceptions of primary school English teacher’s.In the process of qualitative research, the study by the use of literature review as thebasic frame for interview data collection, extract primary school English teachers,who can provide amount of information as the sample, and do depth interview forthem, in order to establish the relevant dimensions of the essential characteristics ofteaching, that teachers described, finally summed up the types of representativeconceptions. In the process of quantitative research, it based on qualitative researchresults as the foundation, developed the "Primary School English Teachers’ TeachingConception Questionnaire", and investigate teaching conceptions of primary schoolEnglish teachers and do the statistically analysis of it.The main results of this study are as follows:One, In the qualitative research, through depth interviews, obtain the four teachingconceptions types of primary school English teachers, that is:knowledge conception,examination conception, interest cultivation conception, development of abilityconception. For each type of teaching conception, the study through the depthinterview data gives the specific connotation for each conception, and summarizes thefeatures for these conceptions which teachers holds.Two, Based on the results of qualitative research, developed the "Primary SchoolEnglish Teachers’ Teaching Conception Questionnaire" and do a wide rangeinvestigation of their teaching attitudes. The results show that, teaching conceptions,which the primary school English teachers hold, are not single, in some extent itshows contradictory, namely imparting knowledge while interest cultivating, abilitydeveloping while examination orienting. This kind of contradictions make a complexrelationship between each teaching conceptions. Also, through the results of qualitative study and quantitative study, found that primary school English teachers’conceptions are influenced by many factors, mainly related to subjective and objectivefactors and external environmental factors. Specifically, the subjective factors includeeducation experience of primary school English teachers and their emotional attitude,the objective factors include the object of education-student, external environmentalfactors mainly include the school factor and the administrative departments ofeducation factors. In addition, this study also from two sides make the reasonablesuggestions for teaching conception holding, in order to provide the reference for theself-development of primary school English teachers’.
