| Mind Map, as an effective thinking tool, is originated by Tony Buzan in 1970 s. It is popular around the world and widely used in many areas. Mind Map works in the same way as human neurons do. It presents knowledge, plans, tasks, etc, visually by combining the functions controlled by both the left brain and the right brain. Studies have showed that Mind Map contributes to learning, thinking and memory. Mind Map has been widely used abroad, but in China, it is at the beginning of the development, especially the researches on the application of Mind Map in English teaching are not so much. English reading is very important for the students. In China, students mainly acquire English information by reading and English reading is an important way to value the students’ learning in every English test. However, the students have lost the interest to English reading under the instruction of traditional teaching method. What’s more, they make little progress after making efforts. Trough studying Mind Map, the researcher explores a way of applying Mind Map into English reading teaching, aiming at arousing students’ interest to English reading and improving their reading ability. The researcher records the four-month experiment. Through analysis of the results derived from questionnaires, interview, and reading comprehension tests, the researcher finds that the experimental class using Mind Map precedes the control class under the instruction of traditional teaching method. Study shows that Mind Map plays a part in enriching background knowledge, consolidating vocabulary and grammar, and comprehending the texts in English reading. This testifies that using Mind Map is a good way to teach English reading which has significance in junior English reading teaching. |
